June 2020 Newsletter

Our newsletter goes out on Tuesdays, but we couldn’t send it on #BlackOutTuesday.

So here it is today.

But first, please take a breath and say his name.

George Floyd

Rest in Peace

No justice, no peace.

And thank you President Obama for letting us know that we’re on the right track. So here we go…

“Go Blue” is the University of Michigan’s rallying cry and we couldn’t agree more. Go Blue is our plan for Michigan, North Carolina and Arizona too, as we party (for Julia Pulver on June 6, see below), make phone calls, textbank, and shake the giving tree.

Welcome North Carolina to our Carousel of Candidates!

At our Big Tent meeting in February, you, our members, chose North Carolina as a 2020 priority. We’ve been working hard to select two campaigns where our help can make a substantial difference.  We are delighted to announce that EBAA will supportDr. Kimberly Hardy in House District 43andDr. Virginia Cox-Daugherty in House District 12.

We are thrilled to support these two dynamic candidates on their path toward flipping the NC House. Getting out the vote for them will also inspire turnout for U.S. Senate candidate Cal Cunningham, running to unseat Republican Thom Tillis.

Kimberly Hardy is a professor of social work at Fayetteville State University, a public HBCU. Her inspiration came from doing service projects for homeless children and families in her hometown when she was young. Endorsed by former Attorney General Eric Holder for her commitment to fair redistricting and the right to vote, she’ll also prioritize affordable health care and clean water*(see way down below), plus she’s a Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate

Dr. Hardy will be a progressive voice for Cumberland County; she won the Democratic nomination in March by beating the incumbent Democrat who had voted for the infamous “bathroom bill” and against Medicaid expansion. She’s committed to protecting everyone’s civil rights and supporting Medicaid expansion. While not technically a flip, the recent state redistricting made House District 43 lean more Republican, so our support could be critical to prevent this district from flipping red.

Virginia Cox-Daugherty is a retired educator and school administrator who holds an M.B.A and two Doctorates, in Education and Theology.  She’s well-known in her community through her involvement in the Red Cross, the local food bank, and serving on the county Board of Elections.  She is descended from two generations of sharecroppers and will support programs that help local farmers succeed. Their delivery of fresh nourishing foods to local residents is crucial to her community’s health. Dr. Cox-Daugherty is very concerned about the loss of good teachers from this rural region and the state. She will vote to increase resources for students and teacher pay

House District 12 is a Republican-held seat and the recent redistricting has made the district even more red. Her opponent has supported bills requiring police to cooperate with ICE, banning sanctuary cities, and various anti-choice legislation. Dr. Cox-Daugherty’s strategy prioritizes reaching out to low propensity voters, particularly in the large African-American community in Pitt and Lenoir Counties.  Her path to victory includes giving them good reasons to engage and vote in 2020 and beyond. Flipping this district would put a pro-choice, pro-Medicaid expansion legislator in this seat and help amplify voices that are too often disenfranchised.

Our work for these candidates starts with dollars and dials. Virtual outreach is expensive, and early money is key. Please give generously! You can contribute through our Giving Circles or directly, right here, and we’ve already started phone banks for them, see below.   With your assistance, we can help North Carolina Dems flip their state house blue in 2020! Fundraising. YOU are making a difference!

Meet MI House Candidate Julia Pulver RN at a Virtual House Party on Saturday, June 6, from 3-4 PM (Pacific), hosted by Michigan House Dems Leader Christine Greig. The energetic Julia will answer your questions about her campaign, the issues that ignite and unite us, and share how her experience as a nurse, and a decade working in public health, will be of value in the state legislature. Plus, hear what she intends to achieve during her first term! RSVP here, and donate here.

In April, EBAA launched our first Giving Circle. In just a few weeks, you helped us raise almost $16,000 for our 3 Michigan candidates.

Our May circle supporting MI Sen. Gary Peters and NC Senate candidate Cal Cunningham has raised almost $11,000., all in small donations.

This early money is crucial.

Give Giving Circles a test drive!

Is there someone you know who wants to engage but is frozen by uncertainty about whom to support? Why not send them one of the following messages:

  • Click here for April’s Michigan message.

  • Click here for May’s U.S. Senate race message.

Email us and we’ll let you know if it worked!

Got an idea for our Fundraising Team? Email that too.

We are stronger together.

Phonebanks

If he can do it, so can you!

Since January, we've made 24,133 calls for candidates and 10,110 for voting rights via Reclaim Our Vote. That's nearly 5500 calls in May, outpacing our previous ~4600 calls/month average by nearly 1000 dials.

Phone calls are the most effective way to reach voters right now and are made even easier by the fact that…everyone is home!

Right now we are making some of the easiest, most rewarding calls ever. We’re calling loyal Democrats, letting them know who their candidate is and sharing resources for how they can get involved. People are anxious to connect and organize because many are looking for something positive they can do. This election is hard for our candidates because they’re unable to go out and meet constituents, so they need, more than ever, to find committed volunteers who can help, and they need them now. Help us do the work to speak for them; help us spread the word.

Here are phonebanks for the next week. Please scroll down for the rest. RSVP!

Texting

Remember the good old days when it was a party? Well, it still is, it’s just different…

Text on Your Own - Real Justice PAC is texting for Victoria Burton-Harris for Wayne County Prosecutor in Michigan as well as other progressive district attorney candidates. Burton-Harris is committed to ending the criminalization of poverty and mental health issues. Wayne County is the home of our candidate Laurie Pohutsky for State House, District 19, and you know how passionate we are about supporting a full ballot of progressive Democrats.

Text for a progressive Wayne County Prosecutor and you’ll be helping improve Democratic turnout for Laurie, too.

You can sign up to text with Real Justice PAC here. Real Justice uses Slack and ThruText.

Text with Us! For our June party, we’re encouraging texters to sign up for the Open Progress (OP) “How to Text with Text Troop” webinar on Saturday, June 27 from 12 pm-1 pm. Then join us afterward from 1-2 PM to continue the texting party with EBAA friends. OP will provide the training you need to text with them and the EBAA party will be a social texting gathering where we help each other handle texts and practice using the tools we learned in OP’s webinar just before.

RSVP for the party and remember, you need to sign up on both links to participate in our 4th Saturday texting party.

Facebook

Remember, even if you don’t like Facebook, our Facebook event page is useful. All our events are here, plus we’ll have a new listing of phonebanks by state.

Postcards

Help! We can use your help to finish writing the last of our 2300 cards urging MI folks to vote on Nov 3. This is a specific, coordinated campaign designed by the candidates. These preprinted postcards are available in Berkeley and Oakland. They have a script and instructions that need to be followed. You write and affix a stamp, then return your cards to the place where you picked them up (or make arrangements with the distributor).

Think about what Governor Whitmer has had to put up with in the last month. Let’s get her some help in the legislature!

Logistics: please make arrangements via email to pick up cards:

We are also writing postcards for Laurie Pohutsky, running for re-election in MI House 19. She won her first term in 2018 by just 224 votes. In November, Laurie faces the winner of the August 4 Republican primary. She is committed to accessible and comprehensive healthcare for all in MI. She serves on both the MI State House Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation and Health Policy Committees. Her cards are targeted to welcome new voters in the district. Addresses and instructions are available by email, and packets of 30 are also available in Dimond Heights, Oakland; Email Jody for details.

Stamps available at your local PO or order by mail from USPS.

Why Michigan? Featuring Michigan State Representative Padma Kuppa and our own Andrea MacRae – Wed. June 3 at 7PM via Zoom.

Padma Kuppa, Michigan State Rep. for House District 41, is running for re-election. Elected in 2018 with our help, she flipped a GOP seat when she won 51.3% of the votes cast and is already named Assistant Whip in their State House. She works hard for paid sick leave in Michigan, equal pay for equal work, prescription drug cost reform, and her core issue, education. Join us to hear more from Rep. Kuppa.

Michigan has 16 electoral votes, is a key battleground state for the 2020 presidential election, and is only 4 seats shy of flipping the State House blue. To join this special meeting with our pals from Together We Will Albany-Berkeley, find details here.

*Water Both NC and MI suffer some similar water issues. Who knew? You know about Flint; read about Cumberland County and Ft. Bragg here, here, and here. Also, see “Democrats Are Ignoring the Voters Who Could Decide This Election.”  Check out the graphs. These are exactly the voters we work to pay attention to.

We have the potential for a huge blue wave to sweep over the country in November and right now is the time we can help that happen. In these endless hours at home, if you’re wondering what you can do…make phone calls! Write postcards! Campaigns need money and volunteers. You can help find both. Voters who have been purged need to be informed.  Voters who have been suppressed can ask for mail-in ballots. And all of that happens, one step at a time, with your help. Stay safe, stay healthy, stay home, Your EBAA Leadership Team
